Escape Fake is an augmented reality game, which takes the players through a digital escape room in order to fix the future by debunking fake news. The game is free to use and does not have any ads.

- This app on a phone or tablet
- Printed images (“markers”) for the augmented reality elements.

Playing the game is done by scanning the image markers, solving puzzles, answering quizzes, and combining 3D objects to uncover the truth and escape the fake.

You can download the markers from our website for free:

Note that we have updated the image markers for Room 1. Head over to our website to download the new versions.

In Room 2, you follow the story of eLiza, an influencer who inadvertently shared disinformation. You combine 3D objects and solve complex riddles to untangle a story involving deepfakes, social media algorithms, and filter bubbles. The stakes are high: if you uncover the truth, you will save the European Union from collapse.

In a not-too-distant future, humanity is living in a post-truth world. The spread of disinformation and deep fake tools have created a broken, dystopian reality in which citizens cannot distinguish what is real from what is not. Guided by Hannah, a hacker from the future, you will work to correct fake stories to curb the spread of mis- and disinformation.

Escape Fake is designed to teach media literacy among students aged 12 to 18. You can also use the game with families, university students, and in informal educational settings.

In the Prequel, you visit the Museum of Fake, set in a dystopian future and get an understanding of different historical fakes. If you solve the three puzzles, you will meet Hannah for the first time.

Together with Hannah, you are investigating the story of a bus driver who was reported to be transporting refugees. You also learn about online behaviour, data privacy and recognizing misinformation.

Escape Fake is co-funded by the European Union through the Creative Europe programme and by the European Media and Information Fund. We also won several awards and nominations with the game. Read more on www.escapefake.org
